New 2011 BMW HP2 Sport
2011 BMW HP2 Sport Features

When BMW Motorrad presented the BMW HP2 Sport in autumn 2007, a dream came true for many boxer fans. Not only is the BMW HP2 Sport still the sportiest and most powerful series production flat twin of all time tailored to meet the needs of ambitious two-cylinder sports riders – its numerous exclusive details used up to now only in motorsports which entered series production for the first time on the HP2 Sport are truly fascinating.

Now BMW Motorrad is following up with the road-licensed “HP2 Sport Motorsport” special model.

The HP2 Sport achieved numerous successes in scores of races all over the world in the past 3 years, among other things with the BMW Motorrad Works Team in selected Endurance World Cup races. The racing boxer took part in renowned 24-hour classics such as Le Mans or Bol d'Or.

Like the factory machines the fairing, fuel tank, seat bench, front mudguard and engine spoiler are painted in the BMW Motorsport colours Alpine White, Lupine Blue metallic and Magma Red. The forged aluminium wheels are in Lupine Blue metallic at the front and Alpine White at the rear. In addition this exclusive special edition with the green and black start number areas on the seat body as well as the factory sticker set is visually very close to the successful BMW Motorrad Motorsport works motorcycle.

The HP2 Sport Motorsport has the same technical basis as the HP2 Sport launched in 2007. The flat twin engine equipped with double overhead camshafts and high-engine-speed capable cam followers used for valve operation delivers 98 kW (133 hp) at 8750 rpm. Maximum torque is 115 Nm at 6000 rpm, maximum engine speed being 9500 rpm.

The stainless steel exhaust system runs underneath the engine and generates the inimitable throaty boxer sound from a silencer which is aerodynamically well placed under the seat bench.

A further exclusive racing feature is the shift assistant in conjunction with the closely synchronised gearbox which permits fast upshifting without having to operate the clutch or stop accelerating. In order to reverse the shift pattern for motorracing if required, a respective substitution pressure sensor is available as an option.

The equipment and suspension of the BMW HP2 Sport Motorsport also features motorracing technology. The spring elements of the Öhlins sports suspension are fully adjustable and a Brembo braking system with radially bolted monoblock four-piston fixed callipers ensures optimum deceleration even in tough motorracing conditions.

Optimum ergonomics are ensured by the adjustable foot rest system, the cast aluminium adjustable handlebar ends as well as the radial-hand Magura instruments. The standard 2D dashboard, which stems directly from MotoGP racing, provides the rider with conventional information as well as with lap times and further motorsports relevant data.

Lightweight construction was a major factor in designing all components. This not only includes the self-supporting front fairing and the self-supporting rear made of carbon or the weight-optimised forged wheels, but also hidden details such as the lightweight generator used in motorsports.

With a dry weight of only 178 kilograms (199 kg fully fuelled according to the DIN norm), the BMW HP2 Sport Motorsport provides playful handling and great motorsports potential, be it on country roads or on the racetrack.

As an option BMW Motorrad offers ABS especially adapted for sports use. An additional pressure sensor in the front brake circuit permits more sensitive brake regulation and prevents the control unit from releasing the front brake too early when weight is taken off the rear wheel suddenly. The ABS can also be deactivated for racetrack use.

The HP2 Sport Motorsport is now available for order and limited to 400 units

Ultra-lightweight 998cc, DOHC, 20-valve, liquid-cooled, 40 degree inclined, in-line four-cylinder engine. The engine has been tuned to provide outstanding performance and excellent passing performance.

The crankcases, pistons, cylinder and cylinder head are based on the 3rd generation R1 powerplant ('04 to '06).

Combustion chamber design and squish area has been optimized for maximum sports performance. The compression ratio for the FZ1 is 11.5:1. Redline is set at 12,000 rpm and features a "soft" rev limiter to protect the engine.

Special lightweight, high lift, high performance intake and exhaust cams help to provide incredible horsepower and fast engine response. Cam profiles and the cam timing are designed to provide for more low to midrange power (Vs R1) .

Automatic cam chain tensioner reduces both maintenance and engine mechanical noise.

Lightweight, 3rd generation R1 based crankshaft provides quick engine response.

Connecting rods are carburized for strength and durability and use a nutless design. The lower end "cap" of the rod is made from the same piece of material as the upper portion, this design is known as "fracture splitting". This design aids establishing true big end roundness and greater precision in con rod dimensions for great durability.

Closed deck cylinder design allows the cylinders to be spaced more closely together, allowing a narrower engine. The cylinder block is a stand-alone part. The benefit if this design is improved sealing, and easier serviceability.

Ceramic composite plated cylinder "bores" are a "liner less" design with the ceramic coating sprayed directly on the aluminum block to ensure great heat dissipation for consistent power delivery, reduced friction and reduced weight.

Short skirt, lightweight forged pistons reduce mechanical vibration and improve throttle response.

3rd generation R1 inspired "stacked" 3-axis gearbox / clutch design stacks input/output shafts to create a low center of gravity and keeps overall engine size shorter front to back. As a result, the stacked design gives the engineers the freedom to place the engine in the frame for optimum front to rear weight balance and thereby maximizing handling

Smooth shifting 6-speed transmission features optimized gear ratios for maximum performance in the "real world". 5th and 6th ratios are wider (taller) for reduced engine rpms at highway speeds for more relaxed cruising.

Compact, heavy duty, multi-plate clutch ensures consistent, positive engagement and uses coil springs (5) and paper based fiber plates (9) to reduce weight.

Mikuni fuel injection system is based on the 2006 R1 design, featuring 45mm throttle bodies fitted with T.P.S. (Throttle Position Sensor). This style of fuel injection uses dual throttle valves. The secondary or sub throttle valves are motor driven and control the intake air volume for optimum throttle response.

The actual injectors are Denso "long nose" type injectors with a high dynamic range and 4-spray holes for excellent power and response across the entire rev range.

Specially designed 8.2-liter air box with intake air temperature sensor maximizes performance. A viscous paper-type air filter is utilized.

The fuel injection's lightweight Electronic Control Unit (ECU) utilizes a powerful 32-bit processor for faster control of the injection process. The compact design also reduces weight.

Yamaha's patented Exhaust Ultimate Power Valve (EXUP) monitors engine rpm and adjusts exhaust flow for maximum performance at all rpms with no flat spots. This system also optimizes fuel economy and reduces emissions.

4 into 2 into 1 exhaust system features stainless steel exhaust pipes and a short design silencer / muffler. The header pipe length has been optimized for maximum power delivery. This system is fitted with two 3-way honeycomb catalyziers with an oxygen sensor to reduce harmful CO and HC exhaust emissions.

High-efficiency curved radiator features compact dual ring-type fans for maximum cooling efficiency. This rad and fan design produces more airflow than conventional flat design rads to maintain optimum engine temperatures for consistent power output. The curved design also allows a shorter wheelbase.

Large, liquid-cooled oil cooler maintains stable lubricant temperatures for extended engine life. Convenient spin-off oil filter is used.

Convenient clutch cover sightglass ensures easy oil level inspection.

Maintenance-free transistor-controlled ignition ensures great performance at all rpms.

Air Induction System (AIS … not ram air) reduces harmful HC and CO exhaust emissions for a cleaner environment.

Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T)

Optimized straight frame design

ENGINE

Ultra-compact, lightweight, short stroke, 599cc, DOHC, 16-valve, liquid-cooled, in-line four-cylinder with lightweight titanium valves produces incredible horsepower. Redline is set at an amazing 16,000rpm.

67mm bore and 42.5mm stroke provide a fast revving powerplant. Engine width is minimized thanks to Yamaha's special casting technologies and "liner less" cylinder design.

Compact "pent roof" cylinder head design features ultra lightweight titanium valves for both intake and exhaust. The intake valve angle is 11.5 degrees and the exhaust is 12.25 degress. The intake valves are 27mm in diameter while the exhaust valves are 23mm.

Single intake valve springs reduce weight and "friction" for optimum high rpm performance. The valve retainers are made of lightweight aluminum.

High flow intake and exhaust ports allow more fuel in and more exhaust out for great power delivery at all rpms.

Lightweight magnesium cylinder head cover and case covers reduce weight.

Separate cylinder block (the cylinder is no longer part of the upper crankcase) design utilizes ceramic composite plated "liner less" cylinder bores. The ceramic coating is sprayed directly on the aluminum block. The benefits are greater heat dissipation for consistent power delivery, reduced frictional power loss, reduced oil consumption and since there are no heavy liners, reduced weight too.

Lightweight forged pistons feature thin top rings for great high rpm power. The pistons are secured by lightweight tapered type piston pins. The lightweight design means fast engine response.

Lightweight crankshaft features 31mm bearing journals. The inertial crank mass has been optimized for excellent throttle response and impressive acceleration. The crank journal bearings feature special oil holes that increase the supply of oil.

High lift / high performance, hollow, side-driven camshafts provide arm stretching power and strong acceleration.

Automatic semi-hydraulic type cam chain tensioner reduces mechanical noise and maintenance.

Mikuni fuel injection system with 41mm throttle bodies features twin injectors (primary & secondary). This type of twin injector system is also found on our MotoGP M1 machine and the latest generation R1. Each of the injectors utilizes 12 spray holes to maximize the atomization process. The secondary injectors, located inside the airbox, begin to function at mid rpms (6,000 to 7,000rpm) thru to redline. This system is lighter and simpler than the sub motor driven secondary valve type FI system. Special short intake tracts allow for higher rpms and improved power.

The F.I. system features separate TPS (throttle position sensor) and APS (accelerator position sensor) sensors.

Yamaha Chip Control Throttle (YCC-T) is another 1st for Yamaha. This system electronically controls the throttle valves for outstanding response and improved controllability at high rpms. The system features Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) and D.C. motor driven throttle valves. The YCC-T system electronically controls the throttle valves for outstanding response and improved controllability at all rpms. The YCC-T is used to provide even more control of the intake air volume for a smoother torque character. The YCC-T features 3 - ECU's inside the main ECU to control ignition, fuel injection and the YCC-T. This special ECU is capable of responding to changes at a speed of 1000th of a second.

YCC-I or Yamaha's Chip Controlled Intake system means the intake funnels / stacks vary in length between 2 pre-set positions depending on engine rpms. The transition rpm is approximately 13,700 rpms. An electronic servo motor varies the funnels. The revolutionary YCC-I provides the best of both worlds …solid low rpm torque and power combined with an amazing high rpm rush. It takes only 0.3 of a second for the funnels to move from the tall to the short position.

Yamaha's exclusive YCC-I electric-control servo motor-driven variable intake funnel system is a world's 1st on a production motorcycle and works in conjunction with Yamaha's fly-by-wire technology and FI systems.

7.6 litre air box utilizes a high flow viscous paper type air filter.

Ram Air Induction System with centrally located intake duct delivers cool, high-pressure air "force-fed" into the intake tract for optimal combustion and greater horsepower at higher speeds. This design provides straight induction from the central fairing duct to the airbox without a lot of bends or turns.

Close ratio 6-speed transmission delivers seamless power delivery and maximum acceleration. Gear widths, splines and engagement dogs have been optimized to handle the R6's power. The shift drum and shifting mechanism are located on the right side of the cases for smooth shifting feel under power. The gears use flat contact-type engagement dogs for positive shifting and great durability.

The "Tri-Axis" or stacked transmission design creates a more compact engine front to back that allows for optimum engine placement in the "sweet spot" of the frame for optimized weight distribution and incredible handling.

Slipper or back limiter clutch assembly reduces rear wheel hop when making hard down shifts or under hard braking. Key benefit is reduced lap times and smoother control when participating in either a race or track day. This clutch uses 9 paper based friction plates and 8 steel plates, plus 6 coil-type clutch springs.

The oil lubrication system has been optimized to reduce frictional loses caused by "oil drag". It features a "two side" oil pump. There is a separate liquid-cooled oil cooler to insure consistent engine temperatures for maximum performance and extended service life.

High capacity cooling system features a curved radiator with dual ring-type fans for excellent engine cooling efficiency. The ring-type fan offers more airflow than a conventional type fan.

Direct ignition coils, iridium dual electrode spark plugs and high-output magneto deliver reliable, super strong spark. With this system, the ignition coils are integrated into the plug caps, significantly reducing weight.

"Mid Ship" 4-into-2-into-1 exhaust maximizes engine performance. The header pipe diameter and length have been optimized for excellent flow. There are three, 3-way honeycomb catalyziers with an oxygen sensor in the system to reduce harmful HC & CO exhaust emissions. The oxygen sensor provides feedback to the ECU so it can adjust for the optimum fuel/air mixture. The "mid ship" MotoGP style, lightweight titanium muffler is located below the engine to central mass and lower the center of gravity for great handling.

The exhaust system also features Yamaha's EXUP System (Exhaust Ultimate Power Valve) utilizing a titanium body and butterfly valves that prevent the "blow back" phenomenon caused by "valve overlap". This design reduces weight and maximizes cornering clearance. The EXUP system eliminates "flat spots" in the power band and reduces emissions too. This is a 1st on a 600cc supersport machine.

High powered 32 bit electronic control unit actually contains three ECUs inside the main ECU to control the FI system, the YCC-T system and the ignition system.

Air Injection System (AIS) injects fresh air into the exhaust ports to fully burn any unburnt fuel in order to reduce harmful CO & HC exhaust emissions

CHASSIS/SUSPENSION

Compact, lightweight aluminum Deltabox frame offers an optimized total rigidity balance for incredibly light and agile handling. This frame is a MotoGP inspired innovation that Yamaha calls a "straight frame concept". This means the top spars of the frame lie as close to possible to the frame's torsional axis (the line connecting the head pipe to the swingarm pivot point). The ram air duct passes through the frame at the head pipe for a straight ram air effect too. A mix of revised mold castings and pressed aluminum plates make up the frame. The engine is a fully stressed chassis member allowing for a super-light frame design.

Lightweight, detachable magnesium rear subframe. The detachable design allows rear shock access and is less costly if the unit is "looped out".

Lightweight, aluminum "gull wing" type swingarm uses a mix of castings and pressed plates for optimum rigidity. The swingarm pivot position has been optimized to reduce the "squat" tendencies caused by drive chain reaction to hard throttle openings.

Key chassis geometry figures include: 1380mm wheelbase, 24 degree caster angle, 97mm of trail and a 52.5% front and 47.5% rear weight balance. The maximum lean angle is a knee scraping 57 degrees.

Fully adjustable 41mm inverted front fork provides 120mm (4.7") of wheel travel and offers incredible suspension performance with ultra-precise feedback. Adjustments include: 5-way spring preload, 4-way high speed compression damping, 20-way low speed compression damping and 25-way rebound damping. The inverted design not only reduces unsprung weight but also increases the rigidity of the fork. The range of adjustments allows the rider to tune suspension to match riding style and conditions.

Upper triple clamp features a 30mm offset for precise handing and great steering feel. The lightweight aluminum clip-ons are mounted below the triple clamp.

Fully adjustable Monocross link rear suspension utilizes a piggyback-style shock providing 120mm (4.7") of wheel travel. Shock adjustments include: 9-steps of spring preload adjustability, 4-way high speed compression damping, 20-way low speed compression damping and 18-way rebound damping adjustability. The piggy back design helps to keep the shock oil cool for more consistent damping.

Radial mount, monoblock, 4-piston calipers squeeze large 310mm dual front discs. The radial mounting design helps to reduce caliper distortion for improved braking performance with excellent control and good lever feedback. The disc carriers are made from aluminium for reduced weight while the sinter metal pads provide incredible stopping power.

Brembo radial pump master cylinder features a 16mm piston. The radial design allows for more powerful braking and improved lever feedback. The lever is adjustable for various hand sizes.

Light weight 220mm rear disc brake is squeezed by a single-piston caliper

Lightweight five-spoke 17" wheels reduce unsprung weight by making hub and spokes a single structural unit. A special casting technique makes the rim section substantially lighter and stronger.

Ultra-sleek "new edge form" bodywork features a sharp front profile with centrally located Ram Air duct, engine-revealing side cowlings and ultra-sleek tail section. There are special side fairing intake ducts to allow cool air to circulate around the engine, fuel tank and frame areas. "Minimalism" and "mass forward" movement are two words that best describe this design body.

17.5-litre fuel tank provides excellent rider ergonomics and an aggressive riding position. The reserve portion of the tank is 3.5 liters. The tank features a front tank cover like the R1 and an internal electric fuel pump.

Separate rider and passenger seats. An optional rear seat cowl is available.

Dual 55 watt H7 "cat eye" headlights. These lights not only cast a bright beam of light, but also feature a sleek profile for superb aerodynamics.

Compact race inspired multi-function digital and analog instrumentation with adjustable back lighting. Features: analog tach, digital speedometer

, dual tripmeters, low fuel warning light, fuel tripmeter, and clock. There is also a programmable shift light and stop watch/lap timer that is controlled by the LHS handlebar mounted switch gear.

Single lens LED taillight provides excellent visibility, extended service life and uses less power than conventional bulbs.

Immobilizer ignition system is designed to reduce the possibility of "ride away" theft. This system must recognize the "coded ignition key" in order for the unit to start. If the immobilizer ignition does not recognize the key (or a theft's screwdriver or other type of "jimmy tool") the bike will not start even if the ignition is turned or forced into the on position. If the system does not recognize the correct coded ignition key, the ignition system and starter will not function.

The MotoGP-inspired R1 is the most advanced Open-class production motorcycle.

The 2011 Yamaha R1 represents a paradigm shift in technology, performance and controllability among litre class sport bikes. Inspired by Yamaha's M1 MotoGP race bike, this latest generation R1 features a crossplane crankshaft design with an uneven firing order to provide outstanding yet easy to control torque and an exceptionally linear throttle feel never experience before. But there is far more to the 2011 Yamaha R1 than just a revolutionary engine.

The 2011 R1 … Yamaha's technical "Tour de Force."

The R1 has been designed to be the "Ultimate Cornering Master" of the open super sport class and one of the keys to incredible handling lies partly in the chassis but equally as important, in its ability to put useable power to the ground. This revolutionary cross-plane crank R1 delivers as much power as the rider wants, exactly when the rider wants it … by a simple twist of the right wrist; leaving the rider feeling like they are directly connected to the rear wheel of the revolutionary R1.

The Bark is bad. The bite is badder.

Forget everything you ever knew about the supersport litre class. The all new 2011 Yamaha YZF-R1 is unlike anything before. That's because it's the world's first production motorcycle with a crossplane crankshaft. The result? Incredibly smooth power delivery and outrageous torque for a rush like you've never experienced.

2011 Yamaha YZF-R1 model Features

Fuel Consumption * 14kpl/40mpg(Imp)

998cc, DOHC, 4-valve, in-line 4 with revolutionary "crossplane" crankshaft

Compact Deltabox chassis with fully adjustable suspension

ENGINE

Ultra-lightweight, compact, 998cc, DOHC, 16-valve, liquid-cooled, 40 degree inclined, in-line four-cylinder engine with "crossplane" style crankshaft.

The key components of this cutting edge engine design are the "crossplane" crankshaft and an uneven firing order. Both of these features are used on Yamaha's championship winning M1 MotoGP racer. Please note … this is not a "big bang" engine. The R1 departs from the norm for in-line 4 cylinder engines and the 180 degree alignment of the crank pins (where the connecting rods attach to the crankshaft), and locates the center two rods at a 90 degree plane from the outer cylinders. This means instead of the crank pins aligned on the same plane (a straight line drawn through the center of the crankshaft), they align on 2 planes in the form of a cross ... or "crossplane". Working in conjunction with the crossplane crank is an uneven firing order. A traditional in-line 4 cylinder's firing order is normally 1,2,4,3 with a 180 degree interval. This R1 engine fires 1,3,2,4 cylinders and the firing intervals are uneven at 270 / 180/ 90 /180 degrees. What all this means to the rider is the most linear torque possible and amazing throttle control. This engine design allows a whole new level of rider - machine communication. One of the most important benefits is the outstanding cornering performance that increased engine control allows.

The engineering goal for the R1 is controllability … not just an increase in horsepower. If that was the case, we could have simply increased the power output of the existing engine design resulting in a peaky, hard to use power band.

The 4-valve cylinder head design features a compact combustion chamber that utilizes lightweight, trick, titanium valves on the intake side. The 4-valve design maximizes breathing efficiency and overall engine performance.

The titanium intake valves are 31mm in diameter while the steel exhaust valves are 25mm in diameter. Lightweight yet super strong VX alloy valve springs control valve movement.

Steep valve angles, 11.5 degrees on the intake side and 12.5 degrees on the exhaust produce a compact combustion chamber.

The lightweight titanium intake valves reduce the reciprocating weight of the intake valves allowing for higher rpms without the concern of valve float. The use of lightweight "Ti" valves has allowed the engineers at Yamaha to use a 4-valve format. In the past, the use of 5 smaller valves allowed a higher rpm limit since each of the "smaller" valves was relatively light. The use of light weight titanium now means the engineers no longer have to use the 5-valve design to achieve the same high rpms.

Combustion chambers have been optimized for maximum engine performance. The compression ratio is 12.7:1.

Compact automatic cam chain tensioner reduces both maintenance and engine mechanical noise.

Short skirt, forged aluminium pistons offer light weight, fast throttle response and great reliability.

Crossplane crankshaft features 36mm journals for increased strength, while the inertial moment of the crank has been increased by 20% versus the last generation R1.

Connecting rods are carburized and use a nut less design. The lower end "cap" of the rod is made from the same piece of material as the upper portion and is cracked away in a process known as "fracture splitting". This process aids true big end roundness and greater precision in con rod dimensions.

Ceramic composite cylinder "bores" are a "liner less" design with the ceramic coating applied directly to the aluminium block to ensure uniform heat dissipation for consistent power delivery, reduced oil consumption, reduced friction and reduced weight.

Closed deck cylinder design allows the cylinders to be spaced more closely together, allowing a narrower engine.

The cylinder block is a stand-alone piece (not integrated into the upper crank case). The benefit is reduced weight and a less tall engine which lowers the centre of gravity.

A "coupling force balancer" is used to quell engine vibration for excellent rider comfort.

Compact ACM (alternator) is mounted directly to the crankshaft. The compact ACM uses rare earth magnets which produce more power for a given size than conventional magnets, therefore reducing size and weight.

Mikuni fuel injection system features twin injectors (one set of primary & one set of secondary injectors). This type of twin injector system is also used on our M1 MotoGP race bike and the R6. One set of injectors (primary) are located in the 45mm throttle bodies while the secondary injectors are located in the air box very near the computer controlled intake funnels. The primary injectors utilize 12 spray holes to maximize the fuel atomization process. The secondary injectors, located inside the air box, begin to function at mid rpms onwards to supply more fuel as required.

The F.I. system features separate dual track TPS (throttle position sensor) and APS (accelerator position sensor) sensors

An oxygen sensor is fitted into the exhaust collector making this a "closed loop" type FI system, which feeds back info to the ECU so adjustments can be constantly made to the fuel-air mixture for improved performance and reduced emissions.

The benefits of fuel injection include excellent throttle response, great fuel economy, reduced emissions, stable idling and no choke to fuss with during start up.

The fuel injection's lightweight Electronic Control Unit (ECU) utilizes a powerful 32-bit processor for fast control of the injection process. The compact design also reduces weight.

YCC-I or Yamaha's Chip Controlled Intake means the intake funnels / stacks vary in length (2 positions) depending on engine rpm. An electronic servo motor varies the funnel length from the tall position at low to mid rpms to the shorter setting for improved high rpm power. The transition rpm between the 2 lengths is approx. 9,400 rpms.

Yamaha Chip Control Throttle (YCC-T) electronically controls the throttle valves for outstanding response and improved controllability at all rpms. The YCC-T is used to provide even more control of the intake air volume for smoother torque character. Similar to the R6 design, the YCC-T features 3 - ECU's inside the main ECU to control ignition, fuel injection and the YCC-T. This special ECU is capable of responding to changes at a speed of 1000th of a second.

The rider can "mechanically close" the throttles by simply closing the throttle twist grip.

Long life Iridium twin electrode spark plugs are used.

Compact close-ratio 6-speed transmission features optimized gear ratios for maximum performance. The "stacked" 3-axis gearbox / clutch design stacks input/output shafts to create a low center of gravity and keeps overall engine size shorter front to back. As a result, the stacked design gives the engineers the freedom to place the engine in the "sweet spot" of the frame for optimum weight balance for awesome handling.

The slipper or back limiter clutch assembly reduces rear wheel hop when making hard down shifts when under hard braking. Key benefit is reduced lap times and smoother control when riding aggressively during a race or track day.

A multi plate clutch is used, utilizing coil springs and paper based fibre plates.

"Ram Air" system "force feeds" outside air via dual ducts located beside the projector headlights into the intake system. As speed increases the air velocity in the system increases and pressurizes the air box. This "force fed" air helps the engine develop maximum power.

Computer optimized large capacity air box maximizes performance. A viscous type, high flow air filter is utilized.

4 into 2 into 1 into 2 titanium exhaust system maximizes power output, reduces weight and improves aerodynamics. The dual under seat mufflers provide an aggressive sound as well as a great styling highlight. This system contains a 3-way honeycomb catalyser and an oxygen sensor. The catalytic converters reduces harmful CO and HC exhaust emissions while the oxygen sensor provides feedback to the ECU to maintain optimum fuel/air mixture at all times.

Dual shorty, large diameter triangle shaped mufflers are a "single expansion" type that create a throaty exhaust note and help emphasize engine character. The exhaust note is much different than on previous R1 models due to the crossplane crank and uneven firing order

… it sounds very similar to Yamaha's M1 MotoGP race bike.

Compact, high-efficiency curved radiator features dual ring-type fans for maximum cooling efficiency. This curved rad and twin fan design produces more airflow than conventional flat designs to maintain optimum engine temperatures for consistent power output.

Large liquid-cooled oil cooler maintains stable lubricant temperatures for extended engine life. Convenient cartridge style spin-off oil filter.

Convenient clutch cover sight glass ensures easy oil level inspection.

High performance direct ignition coils (ignition coil is built into the spark plug cap) reduce weight while iridium spark plugs and high-output magneto deliver increased spark energy.

Yamaha D-Mode variable throttle control enables the rider to adjust the performance characteristics of the engine based on riding preferences or conditions. Standard mode emphasises the very linear throttle and torque feel of the engine. The A mode allows the rider to enjoy sportier engine performance in the low to mid rpms. While the B Mode reduces the power response for riding situations that require softer power characteristics. The switch mechanism is located on the RHS handle bar switch gear.

CHASSIS/SUSPENSION

Aluminium Deltabox frame has been designed to offer an optimized rigidity balance to maximize handling performance. This frame is very rigid or stiff at the head pipe, engine mounts and swingarm pivot point. In other areas, material has been carefully removed to allow "tuned flex". Finished in black, this frame boasts a compact 1415mm (55.7") wheelbase. The swingarm pivot location has been optimized to minimize the chain tension effect under hard acceleration, providing more stable handling. The engine is a fully stressed chassis member to maximize handling. Stability, a key to great handling, is unsurpassed while the ability to hold a line under hard acceleration is excellent. This frame features a mix of gravity cast (head stock & front engine mounts & swingarm pivot area), CF (controlled filling) die cast (outer tank rails) and aluminium panels (inner tank rails). Each of these aluminium parts has different flex characteristics in order to provide the rigidity balance the engineers desired.

The engine mounting location in the aluminium frame is different than previous R1 models. The engine incline (9 degrees) and location (12mm forward) has been changed to improve the weight balance, front to rear weight ratio and the centre of gravity.

Detachable magnesium CF die cast rear subframe reduces weight. The detachable design allows rear shock access and is less costly to repair if accidentally damaged.

Extra-long, lightweight aluminium "truss-type" swingarm provides great torsional rigidity for class leading handling, agility and manoeuvrability. This lightweight swingarm is made up of cast aluminium and CF die cast parts. The distance between the swingarm pivot and the rear axle has been optimized (597 mm) for excellent "turn-in" abilities and rear wheel traction.

This Deltabox chassis offers an incredible 56 degree lean angle.

Fully adjustable 43mm inverted fork features independent left and right damping system. The compression damping is adjusted via the left fork leg, while rebound damping is adjusted on the right fork leg. This system simplifies the flow of oil through the fork and minimizes oil cavitation (aeration of the oil) for more stable suspension performance. Adjustments include 5-way spring preload, 25-way rebound and 25-way compression damping. Front wheel travel is 120mm (4.7"). The thickness of the inner fork tubes and the shape of the outer tubes have been optimized. The adjustable design allows the rider to tailor suspension settings to match rider weight and road /track conditions to maximize handling and suspension performance.

Bottom link Motocross rear suspension utilizes a fully adjustable piggyback-style rear shock. Adjustments include 16-way spring preload, 18-way rebound and 20-way hi speed compression damping and 4-way low speed compression damping. The bottom link design lowers the centre of gravity for excellent handling. This shock features 2-way (hi speed & low speed) compression adjustment plus rebound and spring preload adjustability too. This is a rising rate or progressive system. The adjustable design allows the rider to tailor suspension settings to match rider weight and road /track conditions to maximize handling and suspension performance. Rear wheel travel is 120mm (4.7").

Radial mount 6-piston calipers squeeze fully floating 310mm dual front rotors. The result is incredible braking performance with excellent control and lever feedback.

Brembo radial pump master cylinder with 16mm piston is a direct GP race innovation. The lever is adjustable for various hand sizes.

Single piston (aluminium) slide-type Nissin rear caliper squeezes a lightweight 220mm rotor.

Rugged yet lightweight 5-spoke mag wheels front and rear. The wheels utilize hollow "spokes" to reduce unsprung weight for superior handling. Front rim size is a MT3.50 x 17 while the rear is MT6.00 x17.

Premium sport spec radial tires front and rear.

18 litre fuel tank provides excellent knee grip for hard braking and great rider manoeuvrability. The elongated shape helps to centralize mass and reduces the variance in riding feel as the fuel load (weight) changes.

Race inspired lightweight instrumentation includes an analog tach plus digital speedo, dual tripmeters, clock, coolant temperature and fuel trip meter. This console also features adjustable back lighting, adjustable shift light and a low fuel warning light. Other key features include a gear position indicator, accelerator opening angle indicator, engine mode indicator integrated stop watch, lap timer with split time mode and an air intake temperature display. The lap timer is controlled by the starter switch button for added convenience and ease of use.

Dual 55-watt halogen projector headlights are compact and thereby allow the ram air intake ducts to be integrated into the framework of the headlight assembly. The lights not only cast a very bright beam of light, but also add a unique styling touch.

LED taillight reduces weight and power consumption while providing a brilliant eye catching light. The lens is white while the LEDs are red.

Additional Features

Adjustable footrests can be raised 15mm upward and 3mm backward if desired.

Immobilizer ignition system is designed to reduce the possibility of "ride away" theft. This system must recognize the "coded ignition key" in order for the unit to start. If the immobilizer ignition does not recognize the key (or a thief's screwdriver or other type of "jimmy tool") the bike will not start even if the ignition is turned or forced into the on position. If the system does not recognize the coded chip in the ignition key, it will not allow the ignition system, fuel pump or starter motor to function.

Race inspired fairing improves both aerodynamics and style. The fairing features a slant nose front profile for aerodynamic streamlining, with engine revealing side cut outs.

Windshield features a "screw less" design for a cleaner, more trick appearance.

Slim design rear tail section.

The seating position offers a very sporty yet comfortable riding position.

Lightweight forged footpegs for high strength.

Extensive use of hollow bolts and lightweight fasteners help trim overall weight.

Heavy-duty 50 series "O" ring drive chain.

Low maintenance, lightweight, sealed battery.

Convenient fold out under seat bungee cord straps.

The YZF-R1 offers a significant level of power and performance. It is not intended for novice or inexperienced riders.

Fuel economy estimates are based on US EPA exhaust emission certification data obtained by Yamaha and converted into Canadian measurements. Your actual mileage will vary depending on road condition, how you ride, maintain your vehicle, accessories, cargo and operator/passenger weight.

2011 Honda CBR250R ABS Technicals

The Honda Difference.

The new CBR250R offers the perfect balance of beginner friendly features and the typical Honda refinement that more experienced riders will appreciate. Light weight, superb handling, excellent power and unmatched build quality and attention to detail combine all that with Honda’s famous reliability and the new CBR250R is an instant winner.

Counterbalance Shaft Because it features a counterbalancer, the CBR250R engine is a smooth runner. You get the narrow overall width and power advantages of a single along with the smoothness of a multi cylinder bike.

Single Cylinder Engine A single is the perfect choice for a bike like the CBR250R. It's light, simple, returns excellent fuel economy, and features a broad powerband with plenty of low revving torque just what you want in a first motorcycle.

Fuel Injection Fuel injection means the new CBR250R starts right up, even in cold weather. Compared to a carbureted bike, it also helps reduce emissions and enhance performance and fuel economy.

Layered Style Fairing Take a close look at the CBR250R's unique bodywork, which is designed for style and functionality. It routes airflow for both engine cooling and rider comfort, while creating a unique sportbike style.

Analog/Digital Instrumentation The CBR250R's digital gauges with analog tachometer provides vital riding information in a styled, hi-tech instrumentation package.

Combined Anti lock Brake System Our Combined ABS can be a big help in making controlled stops in less than ideal conditions. Like on wet pavement, or when there's sand on the road or other debris. It's a perfect choice whether you're using your new bike as a commuter or just riding it for fun since it helps you stop with added confidence.

Disc Brakes The new CBR250R features front and rear hydraulic discs for excellent stopping power and brake feel. The single front disc helps keep things simple and lowers unsprung weight, too.

Pro-Link Rear Suspension The CBR250R uses a single shock pre-load adjustable rear suspension that not only gives you a smooth ride, but helps enhance handling as well, just as on some of our larger sport models.

Low Seat Height A low 30.5" seat height does more than help make sure the CBR250R fits a wide range of riders. It makes it easier to put your feet down at stoplights and in parking lots–a big confidence builder.

Passenger Ready A separate passenger seat, integrated grab rail, and standard passenger footpegs mean you can take a friend along when you go riding–another example of the CBR250R's versatility.

Underseat Storage Removing the rear passenger seat provides a lockable area to throw a map, gloves, or a spare set of sunglasses.

The Perfect Blend of Performance, Handling, and Desire.

No other 600cc machine has won more magazine comparisons and AMA championships than Honda's CBR600RR. Striking the ideal balance of power and handling, the new CBR600RR blends a light and compact chassis with impeccable power delivery for a combination that's hard to beat. Also available with the Honda's unique Combined ABS for the pinnacle of sportbike braking performance, the 2011 CBR600RR continues to set the standard for the middleweight class.

Is Honda's CBR600RR the perfect sportbike? Plenty of riders think so. And it's easy to see why. First off, it offers a near magical combination of light weight, free-revving power, compliant suspension and all in a package that’s sized just right.

Next, the CBR600RR has been honed to perfection on the track, where it dominates the World Supersport championship scene. And then there's the CBR's awe-inspiring degree of Honda technology: tuned twin-spar frame, Programmed fuel injection, the Honda Electronic Steering Damper (HESD) and Honda's available Combined ABS that all add up to put the CBR600RR way ahead of anything in the 600 class.

But at the end of the day, one thing stands out above all the rest: The CBR600RR is just a blast to ride. And isn't that why you're looking at sportbikes in the first place?

Breakthrough Braking

The CBR600RR's Combined ABS is the first of its kind on a Supersport machine. The experts are unanimous: brakes like these are a huge step forward. They love them, and you’re going to love them even more. Find out how this revolutionary feature works.

Honda Electronic Steering Damper

Compact, unobtrusive and there when you need it, the Honda Electronic Steering Damper (HESD) helps maintain smoothly predictable high-speed handling and low-speed maneuverability. It's a huge breakthrough in predictable, responsive handling.

A Leader on the track and off

The CBR600RR flat out OWNS the World Supersport Championship. Follow Honda's string of victories and catch up on Team Honda's racing highlights, including classes like MotoGP and Moto2 as well.

Combined Anti-Lock Braking (C-ABS) - All-new, electronically controlled Combined ABS distributes brake force over both wheels, helping to maintain braking confidence in less than ideal conditions. Electronic measurement of rider input on each brake lever permits application of only the front or rear brake in some cases, while the system combines both brakes in others.

Unit Pro-Link Suspension - By eliminating the frame-mounted top shock mount, Unit Pro-Link isolates the chassis from bumps, resulting in more precise handling and better traction. Developed on Honda's championship-winning MotoGP bikes, it's a perfect example of the CBR's superior engineering.

Centrally Located Fuel Tank - The centrally located fuel tank increases mass centralization for a more compact frame design.

Dual-Stage Fuel Injection - Two sets of injectors per cylinder ensure both low- and high-rpm performance. You get near instantaneous high-rpm response, along with great low-rpm metering and clean running.

Line-beam Headlights - Line-beam headlight features two-piece reflector design utilizing two H7 bulbs for optimum light distribution and unique compact design. The result: the headlight helps you see better, and also helps make you visible to traffic.

Ram Air - Wind resistance is a sportbike's enemy. The CBR600RR takes that high-pressure air and channels it through the ram air ducts mounted under the fairing's chin to help boost engine performance.

Honda Multi-Action System (HMAS) Inverted Fork - The HMAS cartridge fork features an exclusive internal piston construction. The innovative design employs smaller-diameter pistons to keep oil velocity high for improved damping characteristics and an expanded range of adjustability. The result: you get more precise suspension performance, especially over smaller surface irregularities.

Radial Mounted Front-Brake Calipers - The CBR600RR's radial-mounted monoblock front-brake calipers are stiffer, for better brake feel and performance. Each caliper uses four chromium-plated aluminum pistons that squeeze lightweight 310mm floating discs for exceptional stopping power.
