2012 Yamaha YZ250F

The Yamaha YZ250F is hitting dealer floors in 2012 with a host of beefy upgrades to the nimble motocrosser. New design elements are found throughout the frame, engine, suspension and gearing giving the YZ250F an overhaul for the upcoming year.

Yamaha first started with the frame by adding a three-box tank rail section instead of its original two-box design for increased rigidity. The frame design also includes a new swingarm pivot point and new engine brackets for more predictable handling.

Housed within the new frame design is a re-worked engine. Yamaha opted for a lighter piston, piston pin and wire circlip. Yamaha claims the new piston gives better performance by reducing overall mass and friction, providing more power from 8000-12,000 rpm. Yamaha engineers also took into account vibration on the 250F, revising the crankshaft balancer to reduce the vibes felt at several key touchpoints including the handlebars, seat and footpegs. In addition, the balancer shaft is now optimized for the lighter piston, which further reduces vibration.

Biggest news for the 2012 model is what’s not changed, as the YZ remains the lone 250 to shun electronic fuel injection. Yamaha did tweak the carburetor, however, boring it out another 2mm, and a high-flow air filter cage has been fitted inside the 250F to enhance top-end performance. CDI settings have also been reformatted to give the bike better throttle response in the mid to high-speed range, and a new silencer with a smaller outlet is designed to meet AMA Pro Racing sound regulations.

Up front the KYB Speed Sensitive System fork is revalved and is now offset by 22mm. The outer tube has also been enhanced for 50% more rigidity, and the steering stem was made longer. The spring rate on the fork is now 0.46kg. The 250F’s rear shock sees new rebound damping and a new swingarm adds more strength to the axle block. Yamaha touts that these changes add more refined damping character and improve bump absorption, allowing for more aggressive sessions on the track.

2012 Yamaha YZ450F

The YZ450F already stands apart on the motocross scene with its rearward-slanting cylinder, the Yamaha claiming improved performance from its offset cylinder and centralized weight. These revolutionary design elements have become fundamental to the 2012 Yamaha YZ450F and remain unchanged. But to keep the YZ450F one step ahead of the competition, the 2012 model will offer revisions to its fuel injection, suspension and tires. Aesthetically the model also gets new color profiles, which include black rims and a gold-colored drive chain.

2012-Yamaha-YZ450F

One thing Yamaha has done for the new model year is update its fuel map and optimize the ignition timing. The goal was to create a smoother throttle response and generate more low to mid-range power with improved roll-on performance. The 2012 Yamaha YZ450F also includes a 42.0mm longer silencer with reduced sound output in keeping with new AMA Racing regulations which limit exhaust to 94db.

Shifting on the 2012 model was given a boost by changing the locating pin to make the shift bar more rigid. The claimed result is more precise shifting on the 450F, particularly between second and third.

Both the front fork and rear shock have been tweaked to improve bump absorption and to reduce dive while cornering. Up front the fork is revalved for low to mid-speed compression damping. Meanwhile, the shock not only has revised rebound characteristics, but also gets a new valve setting for more high-speed compression.

2012-Yamaha-YZ450F-White

Dunlop Geomax MX51 tires replace the existing D742FA and D756 rubber, with Yamaha touting improved traction as a result. The 2012 YZ450F is also adorned with black rims on its blue bike instead of the traditional silver.

In addition to these updates, the GYTR Power Tuner returns for the 2012 YZ450F which allows users to adjust fuel and ignition maps manually. The device is extremely useful for those who wish to squeeze the most out of their bike on those weekend trips to the track. More than nine points are customizable, and users can also get info on engine running time, water and intake temperature, throttle position and rpm.

2011 Beta 350 RR

Only one year after the launch of the RR line of Beta enduro bikes equipped with the first four-stroke enduro engine exclusively manufactured by Beta Motorcycle, the range is now enriched with a brand new model: the 2011 Beta 350 RR. The all new 350cc four-stroke project required a longer period of development as Beta's research and development ambitions went far beyond the idea of simple range extension. The goal was to create a modern 350cc four-stroke engine which combines the qualities of a 250cc four-stroke with the reliability of a larger displacement motor. Over a year of designing and extensive testing has gone into producing the potent off-road powerplant which brings with it tremendous potential. Light, flickable handling, excellent useable power and plenty of low-end torque on tap present an irresistible all-around package - a combination of features impossible to come by on a traditional 250 four-stroke motor.

2012 Honda CRF150RB/R

Presented as an "R" and an "RB" (for the expert mined racer), the Honda CRF150RB/R has undergone some changes to ensure its place at the top of the class. When Honda released their revolutionary CRF150 back in 2008 it shook the mini-cycle and small-bore racing world to its core. Honda welcomes this class-leading machine back into its line-up for 2012.

2012-Honda-CRF150RB-R
Honda claims improved power, torque and drive throughout the powerband due to a new cylinder head, piston, camshaft and carburetor. Revised suspension settings on both the front forks and rear shock promise to improve suspension travel action to smooth out the rough stuff.

The 2012 Honda CRF150RB/R possesses a 149cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke/four-valve engine (bore & stroke: 66mm X 43.7mm) with an impressive compression ratio of 11.7:1. Carburetion is through a Keihin 32mm flat slide.

The five-speed transmission with a *420 chain, the RB model is fitted with a 15-tooth countershaft sprocket and a 56-tooth rear sprocket (the R model has a 50-tooth rear sprocket). Front forks are 37mm, leading axle, fully adjustable Showa cartridge type that deliver 10.8-inches of travel. Pro-Link, fully adjustable Showa single shock on the rear provides 11.5-inches of usable travel.

Brakes are single disc front and rear, with a 220mm rotor on the front and a 190mm disc on the rear. The RB wheels are 70/100-19-inch front, and a 90/100-16-inch on the rear.

The R model has a 17-inch front and a 14-inch rear. Wheelbase is a nimble 50.6-inches (49.6-inches for the R). Seat height on the RB is 34.1-inches, while the R model is slightly lower at 32.8-inches.

Ground clearance on the RB is 13.2-inches, on the R it's 11.9-inches. The gas tank holds 1.14 gallons of petrol. Fully fueled the CRF150RB-Expert weighs in at 187 pounds, and the R at 183 pounds.

Back in the day (i.e. my day), the idea of a 150cc mini-cycle would have been a quaint concept for a pit bike. However, given the new realms of technology and suspension, the CRF150RB and R are substantial mounts.

It makes me wish I were a kid again with this type of quality race bike being made available. If you have a budding Motocross racer at home, the Honda CRF150RB (and R) deserve taking a serious look at.

2011 Moto-Guzzi Stelvio-Enduro

2011 Moto-Guzzi Stelvio-Enduro

A REVAMPED DESIGN AND ENDLESS IMPROVEMENTS LAUNCH MOTO GUZZI STELVIO INTO THE SCRUM ALONG WITH THE OTHER MAXI ENDURO. HIGHLY SUPERIOR AERODYNAMIC PROTECTION PROVIDED BY A BRAND NEW WINDSHIELD, A TRULY HIGH PERFORMING ENGINE AND A RECORD RANGE THANKS TO THE NEW 32 LITRE FUEL TANK.

Named after the famous Alpine pass that connects Valtelline Valley to Vinschgau Valley with 84 amazing s-bends between them, Stelvio has launched Moto Guzzi back among the stars of the maxi enduro world. A highly appreciated bike that has now reached a coming of age at a technical-functional level, thanks to the updates and final tweaking undergone by the MY2011.

It all starts with its style, now even more attractive and trendy rounding off the fuel tank by integrating it within the lightweight fairing, which now highlights a clearly smooth streamlined effect which flows into the double front headlight assembly. The latter feature is a distinctive element of the Stelvio design, and the only detail inherited from the previous version. The top fairing, windshield and the half-fairing with integrated turn indicators are all brand new elements that combine to give the front-end of the Stelvio MY2011 a cutting-edge, more aggressive and dynamic look. It has an original design, but it is above all more functional and versatile, features that are of uppermost importance on models of this type. From an objective standpoint, the style of the new surfaces emphasises two fundamental project milestones compared to the previous version: more efficient aerodynamic protection, thanks to the new top fairing and practically twice fold range capacity thanks to the outstanding new fuel tank with a 32 litre record capacity.

This new Stelvio bike has an air of complete renovation about it, fine examples being the cockpit with brand new graphs on the on-board control panel, a new increased scale fuel indicator.

The heart that beats inside this touring bike is the renowned V-shaped 90° transverse twin-cylinder "Four valve" engine, the highest performer among all the families of engines manufactured at Mandello del Lario, which has now reached exclusive levels as far as its technical/performance development is concerned.

This latest version can boast the careful attention paid to achieve a more silent and smooth running of the engine, whilst tweaking the electronic control, timing system and cooling system. The brand new integrated ignition and injection ECU now exploits the signals sent by the two lambda probes to guarantee adequate feeding throughout the entire combustion cycle, improving response to the throttle control, mid range power delivery further to consumptions and emissions.

The engine now boasts a maximum torque of over 113 Nm delivered at a mere 5,800 rpm and easily reaches a peak in output of over 105 Hp; it practically reaches an automobile-level speed of 7,250 rpm.

Due to the unanimous success of Stelvio's chassis, no changes of any kind have been made to the upper dual beam frame, in high tensile steel that is connected to the engine in six different points giving an exceptionally high levels of torsional rigidity. The chassis geometry therefore remains unaltered, with a rake of 27°, a 125 mm trail, improved by the all important 1535 mm wheelbase which guarantees impeccable steering precision, and is something that has contributed to boosting the reputation of this model over time. High quality suspension whose adjustable preload and hydraulic response during compression and rebound combine to ensure instant, smooth response to pressure on the handlebar.

The front-end is controlled by a solid 45 mm upside-down Marzocchi fork with 170 mm travel, whereas the rear-end has progressive action suspension kinematic mechanism moved by a Sachs rear monoshock which runs on a 155 mm stroke. The Brembo braking system remains in place, unbeatable in terms of efficacy and look, along with the front radial-mounted callipers that engage with a new couple of discs, with lighter flanges and a new brake band that better dissipates heat. Innovation also for the wheels which now boast a cutting-edge designed set of light alloy rims and the standardisation of the rear sizes 150/70/17, previously exclusively mounted on the NTX, also on the standard version of the Stelvio 1200. On request, the wheels can also be assembled with Ber rims and Alpina spokes, which are standard fixtures on the NTX version whilst both models are fitted with the new Continental ABS anti-lock system.

A bike dedicated to long haul travellers naturally needs luggage space, hence the spacious aluminium panniers and additional halogen lights. Even more luxury options are available on the accessory catalogue including a GPS navigator, heated hand-grips, and CA.RC protection(Cardano Reattivo Compatto, i.e. Compact Reactive Cardan Shaft Drive).

The new Stelvio MY 2011 will be on sale from next Spring boasting Guzzi Black and Diamond White colour schemes.
